Now that we’re back, we will move on to photo’s. I know that a lot of you have taken many photos over the course of camp. So I would ask that they are sent to: seantaaffe@douglasscouts.ie This is so that they can be included in our montage of pics. This montage will be uploaded within the next 2 weeks, after the post-camp meeting. Details will follow in the coming days.

Meet Time Changed: Frankfield RC church now at 8.15am
Uniform Policy: Scouts travel in full uniform
Scout Bank: It is proposed to have a Scout bank for the duration, details at the next meeting.
Musical Instruments: If a scout plays a musical instrument they are welcome to bring it along, but we won’t have space for a piano!
Visitors Day: Parents and family members can visit the site on Sunday 29th. It’s very important to let the leaders know in advance, ideally at the next meeting, so as we can organise site access for you.
Lunch snack for trip up: All travelling should pack a good lunch and something extra to keep them going until we get our evening meal prepped.
Gear List
All scout gear must be clearly labelled
- Clothing additions: If not already packed bring old shorts + old t-shirt for possible water activity.
- Small back pack for daily use.
- Wash gear + small towel
- Cup
- Plate
- Bowl
- Knife
- Fork
- Spoon
- J-cloth
- Tea-towel
- Torch + spare batteries
- Personal 1st aid kit – including sun lotion and insect repellent
- PJs
- Sleeping bag
- Ground matt
- Travel pillow – NOT a regular pillow
- Change of clothing for duration…
…Socks, underwear, trousers or trackies, T-shirts + warm hoody
- Sun hat
- Hiking boots
- Waterproof coat and pull-ups
- Substantial water bottle or platypus – NOT small water bottles.
- Trainers and/or flip flops worn at down time.
- Spare large bin bag and smaller ones for wet or dirty gear
As this is an international camp we will be meeting scouts from many other countries, your scout can bring along spare section neckers they can swap with other groups.
Electronic Device Policy: It is advised that scouts do not bring electronic devices, there will be no charge points available.
Douglas & St Finbarres Scout Group, its leaders and Scouting Ireland will not be held responsible for any electronic devices lost or damaged.

As departure date draws near here is some more information on the Venture Summer Challenge
- Meeting at the Scout Hall on Saturday July 14th at 10:30am and travelling by bus to Ballyheige at 11am.
- First hike then is Ballyheige to Tralee and camp overnight in Tralee.
- On Sunday 15th there are activities planned in Tralee and the 2nd hike is from Tralee to Camp and camp overnight in Camp.
- On Monday 16th the third hike is from Camp to Inch Beach where activities are planned and then camp overnight in Inch.
- On Tuesday 17th the biggest of the hikes takes place from Inch to Dingle. In Dingle there will be a number of activities to do including some historical sights and shopping. The group will be staying 8km outside Dingle for the night.
- On Wednesday 18th hike from Dingle to Ventry taking in the Famine Cottages and head to the end of Ireland in Dunmore head
- On Thursday the 19th taking a ferry out to the Blaskets for the day before returning back to site for the final night
- Friday 20th we will depart Aragail and head home. Arrival time to be confirmed during the week.
As you can see this is a packed few days and all activities, campsites, routes and plans were devised by the Venture crew themselves under the supervision of the Scouters.
During the various hikes the Ventures will be accompanied by 3 of our Rover Scouts with Scouters conducting checkpoints along the routes.
For the last number of weeks the Ventures have arranged their own small group hikes so people should be well used to the distances involved.
There is one more hike planned for next Wednesday and Ventures should check out our Venture Crew closed Facebook group for more information and sign up for one last practice hike.
- All monies should be paid up by this evening, Sunday 8th July, via the Easypaymentsplus system.
- Decent and broken in hiking boots should be worn on the hikes, runners or similar footwear will not be suitable for the distances and some of the terrain involved.
- Consent forms MUST be handed up on Wednesday July 11th

Scouts – Jambor Rí – Camp 2018
Ventures – Summer Challenge – Camp 2018
The Jambori trip is fast approaching, so, it’s important that the trip fees are brought up to date to enable us cover the camping, food and transport costs that are now due.
On your behalf the Group has already paid Scouting Ireland a sizeable deposit to hold your Scouts place and we now need your payments to cover the balances due.
The total cost is €395 and it was agreed to accept staged payments for the trip.
We suggest that you make payments as follows
- By 22nd April additional €135 per scout.
- By 6th May additional €135 per scout.
- By 31st May outstanding balance.
As usual the payment option is available on the Easy Payments System.
It’s a Scouting experience that shouldn’t be missed!
So, if your Scout has an interest in going but still isn’t sure, drop into your leader for a chat about it as there are a few spaces still available.

In the meantime, we’d like to encourage all our sections to continue planning outdoor programmes and keep having fun and a laugh: We trust that you didn’t fall for our joke about camping being banned.
And remember, keep the OUT in SCOUTING.
Scouting Ireland regret to inform all members, that from this point forward, all camping activities are prohibited.
This decision has not been taken lightly, and is after long protracted discussions with our Health and Safety consultants over the last few months.
We would hope to be able to to reverse this decision as soon as possible, but at this stage cannot anticipate when this will be.
In the meantime, we’d like to encourage all Sections and Troops to continue with their Scouting programme’s as much as possible. Some suggestions might be:
- Indoor accommodations in the various hostels available around the country. (Please remember to adhere to all the associations Safeguarding policies).
- Stay in your own Scout Den? Or others? (Assuming of course that they comply with fire safety regulations.)
- Plan overnight hikes? (Once you don’t plan on camping during the hike).
- Look out for cheap hotel deals?

On 25th July 2018, more than 5000 Scouts and Scouters will descend upon Stradbally, Co. Laois to create a city buzzing with Scouting Activity.
Douglas Scout Sections are registered to take part, numbers are limited and a deposit option is now available on Easypaymentsplus.com to secure your place. The total cost will be €395 and will include all your food, programme activities, Official JamboRí badge & Neckerchief and travel.
