Douglas & St. FinBarres Scout group are thrilled to inform all members, that we look forward to all camping activities in the future
In the meantime, we’d like to encourage all our sections to continue planning outdoor programmes and keep having fun and a laugh: We trust that you didn’t fall for our joke about camping being banned.
And remember, keep the OUT in SCOUTING.
Scouting Ireland regret to inform all members, that from this point forward, all camping activities are prohibited.
This decision has not been taken lightly, and is after long protracted discussions with our Health and Safety consultants over the last few months.
We would hope to be able to to reverse this decision as soon as possible, but at this stage cannot anticipate when this will be.
In the meantime, we’d like to encourage all Sections and Troops to continue with their Scouting programme’s as much as possible. Some suggestions might be:
- Indoor accommodations in the various hostels available around the country. (Please remember to adhere to all the associations Safeguarding policies).
- Stay in your own Scout Den? Or others? (Assuming of course that they comply with fire safety regulations.)
- Plan overnight hikes? (Once you don’t plan on camping during the hike).
- Look out for cheap hotel deals?
We trust that you’ll bear with us during this difficult time. And remember, keep the OUT in SCOUTING.
Scouting Ireland – Larch Hill – 1st April 2018
There are still a few places available for our June bank holiday Cub Camp in Larch Hill. Please let your section leader know if your Cub wished to attend.
Please read the following carefully and keep an eye on the website for updates.
Date: Friday 1st June to Monday 4th June
Who can go: All 2nd, 6th, 47th and 93rd Cubs are eligible to come however we have booked 48 places altogether.
Cost: €130. Please pay a €50 non refundable cash deposit at your next cub meeting to secure your child’s place. Any section with more than 12 Cubs hoping to go will take bookings on a first come, first serve basis. The first 12 will have a secure place and their deposit is non-refundable. The rest will be put on a waiting list and any spare seats will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Anyone on the waiting list who is not successful will get their deposit back after the Easter Break.
The second payment of €80 will be requested by May 11th and should be paid directly to the easy payment system.
Departure time: 3:45pm on Friday 1st from our Scout Hall. Please ensure your child has had their dinner. returning before 6pm on Monday 4th. Time TBC depending on the weekends program.
Please DO NOT pack ANY electronic devices or mobile phones or bring any such devices on the weekend.
We all very much look forward to this trip but please remember that due to high demand for this trip no place can be fully secured until we have received your deposit and deposits are non refundable.

- Boots and change of shoes for journey home.

- Plenty of drinks (water or hot drinks in flasks but not tins of pop!)
Important
Check-in with your leaders when dropping off your cub as county organisers say due to uneven and snowy ground for hike, cubs without boots will not be permitted to attend.

For who: Sixers and Seconders Only ie 3rd or final year cubs.

Overview: This workshop is a must for any cub wishing to take on the role of Sixer or Seconder. Sessions are to help final year cubs understand the role they will be expected to play in their cub sections and wider scout group. It will give them the tools to assist them take more responsibility for themselves and the younger cubs in their sections.

Who: For the 3rd and final year cubs working on their CSA.
When: Saturday 10th June
From: We leave the Scout Hall @ 8.45am
Return: Back at Scout Hall by 5 or 6pm. We’ll update you by Facebook, WhatsApp group and/or text.

Gear needed:
- Necker
- Rain gear: Light rain coat and pull ups.
- Comfortable back pack is important as distance covered will be at least 20km. (25Ltr bag is big enough)
- Sun hat, sun lotion & insect repellent is a must.
- Footwear: Ground will be varied so sturdy walking shoes or boots are a must have.
- Change of clothes in a separate bag, just in case, can be left in car.
- Cubs can travel wearing their trainers and change into boots at start of hike.
- Food: Have a good breakfast. Bring healthy packed lunch and plenty of water + bag of Tayto crisps (good for replacing lost salts on hikes).
- Please no fizzy drinks, they are dead weight to carry and give a false energy boost.
- Bivvi bag or large plastic bin bag (to sit on during breaks).
- Whistle, compass and cubs personal 1st aid kit.
No shorts, only long trousers to be worn.
Some parents are helping with transport on the day, so please do offer if you’re free.
You’re also very welcome to join your cub on the hike.

Cost: €5 covers cost of BBQ at the end of the day.
Is your cub going? So county organisers can ensure plenty of BBQ food for your cub please let your leaders know at your next cub meeting, or sooner.
What to bring: Have a good breakfast before leaving home. Bring a healthy packed lunch and lots of water. Please no fizzy drinks as they only give a very short false energy boost.
Swim wear or a wet suit if they have one, a towel and change of clothes. Water resistant sun lotion and sun hat.
Neckers must be worn.
What if my cub can’t swim? All cubs will be wearing life jackets, so if they’re happy to get wet they’ll have a great day.

Our Sea Scouting friends from Crosshaven are supplying sail/rowing boats and sailing equipment as well as their qualified leader instructors.
Please ensure all of your cubs gear is clearly labelled with their name.
