Here is VERSION 1 of our proposed Gear List. It WILL change so please keep an eye on the website!
It might be a good idea to start getting things together – rather than the usual rush at the last minute!
Things you will need are:
- FULL UNIFORM. We will depart in full Uniform. No Exceptions! Now is a great time to check you have all parts of your uniform.
- Spare neckerchief. While not essential, would be useful as a spare, or if you wanted to swap yours etc. (You must always have a Douglas / St. FinBarres neckerchief, so if you’ve only one with you, then you can’t swap it if the opportunity should arise).
- Hiking boots will be necessary. Remember too that it’s VITAL to “wear in” hiking boots. If you need to or choose to buy new boots, you MUST have them “worn in” before camp or you’ll be VERY uncomfortable in them!
- Water bottle – At least 1 litre – possible 2 x 500ml’s would be a good idea.
- Sleeping Bag
- Pillow (if you like. Inflatable maybe?)
- Pillow Case. (There should be pillows in the chalet but you will NOT be able to use them without a pillow case that you bring yourself.
- Track-ends/Leggings
- Warm Sweater
- T-Shirts
- Changes of Underwear
- Plenty of Socks
- Warm Nightwear
- Change of Shoes or Runners
- Shorts & Trousers
- Raingear – Waterproof Jacket & Trousers
- Warm Hat & Gloves
- Wash Gear – Toothbrush & paste, Shower Gel, Shampoo, Comb
- Towel
- Swimming costume & hat
- Tea-Towel & Dish Cloth
- Sun hat
- Sun cream & Lip salve
- Torch & Spare Batteries
- Rucksack or similar type hold all
- Day trip bag
Just for information, there are NOT clothes washing facilities in the chalet. As far as we know there are no launderette facilities anywhere in the vicinity – so either have enough of clothes for the duration or be prepared to do a hand wash yourself!
The two types of bag are important and worth considering. The main rucksacks will be going onto the coach before we leave Cork, and will not be available again until we get to Switzerland. So everything needed for the journey will have to be packed in the day bag. We would recommend that this would at least contain:
- Change of clothes
- Washgear & towel
- Water Bottle
If it’s small enough, it might be nice to have the sleeping bag in the day bag? While not essential, it would add to the comfort on the journey, both on the coach, and possibly on the ships.
That’s about it for now.

Larch Hill Cub Camp 2019
Please ensure your child has a good meal before travelling.
Time TBC depending on the weekends program.
Food on Friday: Please pack a healthy supper with a refillable bottle of water, in a small back pack, for
Friday Evening. No food is to be consumed on the bus so we will stop for our pack lunches on the way and enjoy some hot grub and biscuits once we arrive. All meals after this will be provided.
We also request that you do not provide your child with any fizzy drinks or sweets/unhealthy snacks for the weekend. We will provide plenty of snacks throughout the weekend.
Please DO NOT pack ANY electronic devices or mobile phones or bring any such devices on the weekend. Ensure you have an emergency contact number for your child’s leaders before we leave.
Gear List:
We would advise that all gear is labelled and packed entirely into one big bag and a small back pack is used for the bus. This saves space and confusion when sorting out who’s gear is who’s when we arrive.
- Please travel in Full Cub Uniform (kneckerchiefs should be washed and ironed)
- Old/worn clothing is best to be used for this weekend
- Sleeping bag
- Ground mat
- Rain jacket & leggings
- Warm hat and gloves
- Hiking boots
- Runners
- Tea towel
- Unbreakable plate, bowl and mug
- Knife, fork and spoon
- 3 Spare changes of clothes, socks and underwear
- Towel and personal wash gear
- 500 ml+ water bottle
- Torch or headlamp
- Sunscreen and sunhat
- Black bag for bringing home wet/dirty gear

On Thursday next, 4th April, we’re having a parents meeting in the hall at 8:30pm, regarding Summer Camp.
We’ll have updates on lot’s of things – and also, it’s a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Hi There,
On next Monday night, 25th March, we’ll be having a meeting in the hall at 8:30. This meeting is for all Scouts going to Summer camp in Switzerland. It’s also for any Scouts who haven’t signed up but might like to. At this stage we’ve a small number of places still free.
On the night, we’re planning to have a look in a bit more detail at the structure of camp, POSSIBLE activities & some initial practicalities. (We say possible activities, because these are always subject to change.)
We are also planning to have a parents meeting on the following week. More details on this soon….
We’d really like to see as many people as possible there.

Camp is now only 4 months & a bit away!!
We’d like to get a camp badge designed! There will be a prize for the chosen badge. Not telling you what yet – but it will be worthwhile!! :-)
It will be worn on Scout shirts – and everyone going will get one!]
We don’t want to influence your creative thoughts too much – but some things you might think of putting into it: Scouting, Switzerland, Ireland, Mountains, Snow. (These are only thoughts – please don’t try to squeeze them all in, I’d say!!).
Just to show you the kind of thing we’re talking about, we had a badge the last time we went to Switzerland. While this isn’t exactly it, it was close to:

- Hiking trousers (no jeans or cotton tracksuits!)
- Warm clothes – multi light layers are best.
- Plenty of drinks (water or hot drinks in flask) – but no fizzy drinks please and no cans

- Healthy packed lunch
- In separate small bag: Change of shoes, clothes (i.e. warm hoody) for after the hike, this bag will stay on the bus while we are out hiking

Hi All!
Time is getting close – in just over 4 months time, we’ll be in Adelboden!
We’ve good news on dates. When we were discussing what we’d like to do with Jeka, we found we just didn’t have enough time! So we’ve managed to extend the dates by 2 days!!!!
Dates are now:
Depart Cork Thursday 11th July @ approx midday.
Back in Cork Wed 24th July @ approx 4pm.
While it’s very unlikely to have any change from those dates – the time’s are only an indication at this point.
Could everyone please check that they’re up to date with payments? At this stage we’ve a lot of outgoing costs – so this is really important.
Also, we do still have a SMALL number of places available if people still wanted to sign up…
