Hi There,

On next Monday night, 25th March, we’ll be having a meeting in the hall at 8:30.   This meeting is for all Scouts going to Summer camp in Switzerland.  It’s also for any Scouts who haven’t signed up but might like to.  At this stage we’ve a small number of places still free.

On the night, we’re planning to have a look in a bit more detail at the structure of camp, POSSIBLE activities & some initial practicalities.   (We say possible activities, because these are always subject to change.)

We are also planning to have a parents meeting on the following week.  More details on this soon….

We’d really like to see as many people as possible there.

Talk soon!

Competition – Design a badge – Adelboden 2019

Posted by Enda | Posted in 2nd Scouts, 47th Scouts, 6th Scouts, Camp 2019, Group News, News, Rover News, Scout News, Summer Camps, Venture News | Posted on 02-03-2019

Howdy!!

Camp is now only 4 months & a bit away!!

We’d like to get a camp badge designed!  There will be a prize for the chosen badge.  Not telling you what yet – but it will be worthwhile!! :-)

It will be worn on Scout shirts – and everyone going will get one!]

We don’t want to influence your creative thoughts too much – but some things you might think of putting into it:  Scouting, Switzerland, Ireland, Mountains, Snow.  (These are only thoughts – please don’t try to squeeze them all in, I’d say!!).

Just to show you the kind of thing we’re talking about, we had a badge the last time we went to Switzerland.  While this isn’t exactly it, it was close to:

If you want to see the real one, Vicki still wears it on her uniform!

Closing dates for this competition will be the end of march.  So get thinking & designing.   Please sent any ideas to camp19@douglasscouts.ie

Send any questions there too!!

Camp 2019 – Switzerland – Dates Update!!

Posted by Enda | Posted in 2nd Scouts, 47th Scouts, 6th Scouts, Camp 2019, Group News, News, Rover News, Scout News, Summer Camps, Venture News | Posted on 19-02-2019

Hi All!

Time is getting close – in just over 4 months time, we’ll be in Adelboden!

We’ve good news on dates.  When we were discussing what we’d like to do with Jeka, we found we just didn’t have enough time!  So we’ve managed to extend the dates by 2 days!!!!

Dates are now:

Depart Cork Thursday 11th July @ approx midday.

Back in Cork Wed 24th July @ approx 4pm.

While it’s very unlikely to have any change from those dates – the time’s are only an indication at this point.

Could everyone please check that they’re up to date with payments?  At this stage we’ve a lot of outgoing costs – so this is really important.

Also, we do still have a SMALL number of places available if people still wanted to sign up…

As ever,  any queries or questions to:

County MPC for Scouts

Posted by Andrew Breslin | Posted in 2nd Scouts, 47th Scouts, 6th Scouts, Hikes, Scout News, Scouts | Posted on 11-02-2019

Date: February 22, 23, 24

Depart: Friday 6pm from Frankfield RC church

Return: Sunday 3.30pm Frankfield RC church

Transport: By bus

Pre-leaving: Scout teams will under go a gear check. Parents should remain until their scout has been checked-in.

Location: Comeragh Mountains

Cost: €15

    What is the event?
It is a Mountain Pursuit Challenge for scouts from the whole county. They camp under canvas for 2 nights and spend the Saturday and Sunday self-navigating across the hills using compass and map.

Teams are of 4 scouts and they are expected to look after themselves eg making camp, cooking and self-navigating. They will have to carry everything needed for the event inc hiking tents, food, clothing and cooking equipment. The tents and cooking equipment will be supplied by the group.

On Friday night from drop-off point they walk 15 minutes and setup camp #1. Saturday morning breakfast, break camp and hike 2-3 hours and setup camp #2. After food and gear checks they undertake the challenge route, that evening they get food and mix with other scout teams. Sunday get breakfast, break camp and hike back to the bus pickup point.

The routes are all pre-set and the challenge route will have manned check points along the way. They’ll also be accompanied by a scout leader.

    Food planning
Scouts should have a good meal before leaving on the Friday. They also need to plan food/snack for Friday night. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner for Saturday and Sunday Breakfast.

They should also bring snacks to have during the hikes eg peanuts / raisins. Please don’t send them with tubes of pringles, canned drinks or large containers of sweets. These just take up the limited space in their bag and are heavy.

Suggestions: Pre-cooked rashers / sausages in zip lock bags. Beaten eggs in a small screw top bottle. Frozen slices of brown bread also in zip-locked bags. Pasta pouches with sauces etc. Just think nutritional. Teams should meet pre-the event to buy and plan their menus and food budget.

  • Small empty day sack
  • Warm sleeping bag
  • Ground matt
  • For pillow, stuff sleeping bag sack with the spare dry clothes.
