The Phoenix Challenge 2016

Posted by Conor Crowley | Posted in 2nd Scouts, 47th Scouts, 6th Scouts, Group News | Posted on 17-08-2016

On Thursday morning a Patrol of 7 of our Scouts will embark on a journey to the Mount Mellerary Scout Centre in Cappoquin Co. Waterford to take part in the National Campcraft competition, The Phoenix Challenge.

4 days of healthy campcraft competition, team and skill challenges, special projects and a cooking competition.

On both Friday and Saturday the Patrols participate in an action packed programme of team and skill challenges such as building large pioneering structures, rafting, initiative challenges, emergency situations, mapping projects and many more. During the evenings a mixture of fun activities (such as campfires and themed trade fairs) and special projects (such as debating or environmental projects) take place.

The theme for the Phoenix Challenge 2016 is ‘The age of Reconnaissance, Discovery, and Exploration.’ The theme, like other symbols in Scouting, is about helping encourage an atmosphere of fun and adventure.

This is a huge undertaking for any group, firstly to qualify from your county shield competition and secondly to plan, train and organise a patrol over the summer months and fit in annual camp

For the first time the Douglas & St. FinBarres Scout Group is putting forward a patrol into this competition. It is a credit to the Scout leadership team and to the loyalty of the Scouts involved that we have managed to pull this one off.

As Group Leader it was a massively proud moment to see the Scouts on their last training session in the hall on Tuesday night. I wish them all the luck in the world and no matter what happens they have done this group proud.

I want to also take a moment to thank the devotion and dedication of Eoghan, Vickie, Evan and the rest of the Scout leadership crew who have given so many hours to this event.

By the time the closing ceremony comes around at 15:00 on Sunday all the hard work will have been worth it

Yours In Scouting

Conor Crowley

Mount Melleray Weekend – Parking System

Hi There,

For the Mount Melleray Weekend, we’re trying to make things easier for all!  With the numbers travelling, departure and arrival becomes more complex all the time.  In an effort at having an easy life, can we suggest that people would park on the LEFT side of the car park in FrankField only?  This will leave the right side free for the coaches.

Further details will be posted soon with more information, times etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Travel Update – Camp 2016 – AUSTRIA!!!!

Posted by Enda | Posted in 2nd Scouts, 47th Scouts, 6th Scouts, Camp 2016, Group News, Rover News, Scout News, Summer Camps, Venture News | Posted on 18-01-2016

Hi All,

Just said it was time to give an update!  You mightn’t be hearing too much, but we’re working hard behind the scenes.  This is going to be one of the best camps ever!!!

At the moment, we’re planning activities and excursions. The biggest problem we’re having is trying to fit in everything that we’d like to do…. :-)

Anyhow – ferries are now booked, and the travel times look like:

  • Departing from Frankfield on 30th June at about 14:00.
  • Departing from Dublin Port to Holyhead on the 20:40 sailing
  • Departing from Harwich to Hook of Holland at 09:00 on Friday 1st July.
  • Travelling onwards to Elmen in Austria.

Coming home will be pretty much the reverse…

  • Departing Hook of Holland on 13th July at 14:15
  • Departing Holyhead on 14th July at 02:30
  • Aiming at being back in Frankfield at APPROXIMATELY 10:00 on 14th July (Thursday).

That’s about it for now.  PLEASE get in touch with any questions or queries.  We’ll answer whatever we can!!

Yours in Scouting,

Enda.

Seasons Greetings to you all

On behalf of the Group Council, the Section Leaders and all our active Scouters I would like to wish you and your families and very happy and peaceful Christmas.

Our scouting has come to an end for the calendar year of our 2015 and we have had another fantastic 12 months here in the Douglas & St. FinBarres Scout Group.

A brilliant summer camp in Cavan for our Scouts and Ventures last July and looking forward to what promises to be an unbelievable experience next July in Austria.

Our newest sections, the 93rd Cork Beaver Colony and 93rd Cork Cub Scout Pack are now up and running and will continue to grow and learn and bring Scouting to many more kids in our parish and from further afield.

Thank you to the work of our Parents & Friends Committee for their efforts in 2015. Many thanks to the parents of our youth members who encourage their kids and bring them to the many varied activities we offer.

Most importantly thank you and seasons greetings to all our youth members; From our eldest Venture Scout to our youngest Beaver Scout we hope that 2016 will be as much of an adventure for you as 2015 has

Yours In Scouting,

Conor Crowley

SUPPORTING SCOUTING IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Over the last week our sections have been given their batches of their 12 Days of Christmas Draw tickets. These tickets are Scouting Irelands annual fundraiser. All proceeds go to support local scouting and the development of Scouting Ireland national campsites.

Tickets are €2 each and each family is given a book of 20 tickets. If you require additional tickets please speak with your section leader to arrange them; additional books will be issued once a full sold book has been returned.

Our Parents & Friends Committee are coordinating this years tickets distribution and organisation. In order to return the tickets back to SI National Office in time for the draw we are requesting that ALL books of tickets (sold or unsold) must be returned to the Scout Hall on Friday December 4th at the latest

Best of luck and thank you for your support
